Tdot Shots Five Questions Interview

Interview by Tdot Mike aka Mike Simpson / https://www.instagram.com/tdot_mike

Who are you?

I am a hobby photographer in Toronto. I restarted my passion for photography photo late 2019 exploring the city of Toronto on my own for two-three years (covid). I saw more of Toronto in that period than all my years living here.  Photography is my creative outlet and is a mental recharge (physically too with all the photography yoga needed to take photos).

How did you get into photography?

When I visited Hong Kong, my dad’s friend put a zoom lens in front of me. That moment of seeing a building pulled from so far away to what seemed like in front of me remains very vivid.  That defining moment led me to buy a point and shoot camera which I carried with me most of the time. I bought two professional cameras but never went beyond auto mode and literally just kept pointing and shooting.

I finally dusted off my DSLR in late 2019 when I realized I spent too much time with my ā€œheads downā€.  I feel my real photo journey started then. That’s when I spent time to really learn about photography and my camera, and explored what I liked to photography.  Finally I was out of auto mode!

What do you like to shoot and where?

What I like to shoot is tied closely to experiences that I enjoy. My core favorite is night photography (light trails, astro, bokeh, city). I come out from the night into day especially in autumn and winter (landscape and city). I’ve even added the occasional sunrise to the list.

I’ll shoot anywhere that have these elements and allow me to discover, learn, and be challenged but most importantly have fun doing so.

What gear do you use?

I shifted to a Nikon Z5 mirrorless two years ago from a Nikon DSLR.

Lens: Nikon 24-200mm, Nikon 18-35MM F2.8 and recently added a zoom lens –Tamron 50-400mm.

Tripods:  a big Manfrotto that started my journey with me, a Gitzo travel (my go to) and a new Ulanzi Falcam TreeRoot (for my zoom lens).

Samsung Ultra 22 for when I’m taking a lot of photos and in places where it is possible a security guard may think I’m a professional photographer just because of my gear (LOL)

Who are your favorite photographers?

So much great talent in the community. I’m inspired by photographers who share the world through their lens bringing perspectives that are not commonly photographed, pushes the boundaries of any photo rules, and put their unique personal style to their photos.

From an inspiration perspective,
-When I started my journey:   @eddiemarkhampyro  @gtanophotography @27petals
-Along the way: @seanfrankey  @pkphotography.ca
-Special shout out:  @petesphotography5

Now, I can name many more photographers for different types of photos and something about their work that draws me in.

Any advice would you like to share?

Find your space. Make it your own.  Don’t forget to take in the moments.
