1. Who are you?

My name is Sayantan Basu, a Toronto-based travel and landscape photographer and the creator behind Roam N Beyond on YouTube. Through both photography and film, I focus on capturing the connection between people and places—especially those quiet, fleeting moments that tell a deeper story of exploration. Originally from Kolkata, India, I now live in Canada, which has opened up a whole new world of dramatic landscapes and vibrant cultures to document. You can find my latest photos and behind-the-scenes adventures on Instagram at @justsayantan

2. How did you get started with photography?

My journey began during my college days in Kolkata, shooting with a small point-and-shoot camera while traveling with friends. Moving to Canada expanded my horizons—iconic national parks, rugged coastlines, and big city skylines all inspired me to go deeper. I’m largely self-taught, having refined my skills through trial, error, and countless online tutorials. What began as a hobby has become an essential way for me to explore, interpret, and share the world around me.

3. What do you like to shoot and where?

I’m especially drawn to landscapes, seascapes, and the human stories embedded within them. In Canada, my favourite locations include the Canadian Rockies, Newfoundland’s rugged coastline, and Toronto’s waterfront at sunrise. I’m equally inspired by urban scenes—hidden alleys, heritage architecture, and seasonal festivals that reveal a city’s soul. Whether it’s a dramatic mountain range or a quiet backstreet, I aim to translate a sense of place and emotion into every frame.

4. What gear do you use?

My main setup is a Nikon D750 paired with a Nikkor 24–70mm lens and a Sigma 150–600mm lens for distant subjects. For aerial perspectives, I use a DJI Mini 4 Pro, and for spontaneous or quick captures, I rely on my iPhone 14. I see gear as a means to an end rather than an end in itself—my focus is always on light, composition, and storytelling rather than chasing the newest equipment.

5. Who are your favourite photographers?

I’m inspired by a mix of classic and contemporary artists. Ansel Adams’ mastery of light and landscapes continues to shape how I see black-and-white work. Among today’s creators, Adam Gibbs, Nick Page, and Michael Shainblum motivate me to blend adventure with storytelling. Closer to home, Toronto photographers such as Chris and Todd push me to view my own city with fresh eyes. I also admire everyday photographers who share authentic work online—proof that creativity can flourish anywhere.

Our thanks to the artist for the contribution of photography and interview! 👍
